HOW TO ADD -ING / -ED



SPELLING RULES

VERBS: -ING / -ED
-ING
                               -ED       
Consonant + -y: -y + ing
TRY = trying
Consonant + -y: -y = -i + ed
TRY = tried
Vowel + -y: -y + ing
PLAY = playing
Vowel + -y: -y + ed
PLAY = played
Silent “e”: -E + ing               
MAKE = making

Exceptions:
TO DIE = dying
TO LIE = lying

WHEN TO DOUBLE THE LAST CONSONANT
1 syllable words: CVC.
STOP = stopping
HELP = helping
1 syllable words: CVC.
STOP = stopped
HELP = helped
2 syllable words: CVC + stress on the last syllable.
ADMIT = admitting
OPEN = opening
2 syllable words: CVC + stress on the last syllable.
ADMIT = admitted
OPEN = opened
Exception: 2 syllable words ending in - L or - P (British English only):
TRAVEL (CVC but stress on the first syllable) = travelling / travelled
KIDNAP (CVC but stress on the first syllable) = kidnapping / kidnapped
Exception: words ending in - X or - W:
BOX = boxing / boxed
SHOW = showing / showed
